Multiplication Facts

The majority of math-related stress in 4th grade students comes from the lack of knowledge of the basic multiplication facts.  It is EXTREMELY important that students become fluent in their facts so they can concentrate and spend time on the process of HOW to solve a problem, and not just spend all of their time trying to do the computation of the problem.

Below are some practice links to Quizlet.  Clicking on a link below will allow many options to practice a set of facts:  Flashcards, Learn, Test, Scatter, & Space Race.

Reflex Math for Homework

Parent letters were sent home today for an online math program that has been generously funded by the WO Education Foundation.  As I’ve said before, the knowledge of the basic multiplication facts is imperative to your child’s success in 4th grade math and beyond.  Reflex Math will help the students be fluent in their multiplication and division facts.  (A fact is mastered when it can be answered in 3 seconds or less.)  Initially, the program takes about 20-30 min. per lesson each day, but after the assessment phase, it will then take only about 10-15 min. per day to complete.  This program is most successful when it can be done at least 3 days each week.  Unfortunately, because of our limited schedule, this fact fluency practice will need to be done outside of the regular class period.

Parents, please encourage your child to complete this practice at home.  If you do not have a computer or internet access (there’s also a Reflex Math App for tablets), then your child may come to my room from 7:30am-7:45am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  However, please keep in mind that I have about 110 math students and only 26 computers!

Some of my math students have been working in the Reflex program since early in the year, and those students will continue to come during their assigned times.

I will monitor all students’ progress and periodically print the “milestone” certificates.  Students will earn class rewards based on their progress.

I encourage you to click on the link below to watch the video on the program’s website and learn more about Reflex Math.

X Retest Tomorrow!

The final multiplication retest will be tomorrow.  All students who have scored less than 90 so far will re-test.  Students who’ve scored 90 and above have the option to re-test, or they may have free time (including electronic devices) during the 20 minutes of testing.

After the retest grades have been updated in Skyward, students who do not have a 90 or above score on the multiplication fact test will receive a multiplication fact homework packet on Monday.  I will also be working with them 2-3 days per week during tutorials (or recess if they already have a scheduled class during tutorial time).

Multiplication News

The first multiplication facts test was given at the end of last week, and the students were given their scores & tests back today.  The tests were put in their graded work binders which will be sent home tomorrow.  You may also check your child’s grades by signing into Skyward.

A re-test will be given on Friday to all students whose grade was below a 90.  Students who made a 90-99 have the option of re-taking the test and trying to improve their scores.  Those students who made 100 or who have chosen not to re-test will have some time to play educational games on electronic devices during the 20-min. testing time.  Should a student’s test grade improve, the X Facts Test grade in the gradebook will be adjusted to reflect the improved grade.  A declining grade will not be adjusted.
